Software Reviews of Mac OS X 10.3 Panther [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Great Deal Summary: 5 StarsFor a single computer, 129 dollars is a completely reasonable price for Panther, but when you have multiple computers at home like I do, it adds up to a bit more than I care to spend. However I am also 100% opposed to pirating software. Thank goodness that Apple has provided this very affordable package licensing option. Now I can legally install Panther on all 4 of our Macs for less than what it would cost to buy the single user license for just 2 computers. Why doesn't Microsoft offer something like this for Windows?
Customer Review: No review answers my questions! Please help Summary: 1 StarsI have been using an Apple computer for 22 years. I now have Jaguar, which is worse than the prior update. I worked by leaving significant folders on the desktop and like to arrange their order. I am highly visual. I loved scrapbook, notes, and the windowshade feature to stack various parts of a project on my desk.. I have none of these in the unix based system. I keep the dock small after trying various locations and sizes.. With vitreous floaters I don't like things that swoosh, or grow, or pop up and make using this system more visually tiring than earlier options. Not to be persnickity, but if one is a home user and does only email and letters, memos, training materials to hand out--why all the bells and whistles without a general opt in for "simple". Stickies don't replace notes; there is no ability to stack a series of "windowshades" on the full desk top No one has given me a reason to upgrade. I understand it is impossible to go back to the system 9, which I preferred. System 7 something was my all time favorite. I do have a G-4 with 128 mg of memory and graphite airport. Can people suggest why Panther would do anything for mac fans who don't do games, music, complex graphs, charts, etc. thanks
Customer Review: Went from Windows to Mac. OS X Summary: 5 StarsTo compare the two well ...... Windows (IBM Formatted Operating system) loses hands down I would suggest everyone to invest into a Mac. G4 or higher. What are the reasons why I would say this? I don't spend all my time working on bugs in Os X Panther. Windows Xp Home & Pro. I had this problem. Plus, Windows XP no matter what crashed my programs a lot (shut them down). OS X Panther is incredibly user friendly. I like the changes they added. They added short cuts on the left side of every window. This makes it easier for not only me but my wife to browse with ease. My wife is one of the most computer ignorant people I have ever met. She about killed me when I got rid of the IBM desktop to get a Mac. G4 (traded a Athlon Duron for the G4). The Jaguar and 9.2 operating systems she hated because it wasn't as user friendly to the point she didn't have to bug me (the computer geek) every five seconds to ask where the programs she needed was. With Panther she doesn't bug me but maybe once in a blue moon. This also ,much like Jaguar, is a very stable operating system. I don't have programs shut down on me nearly as much as Windows XP does. I like the fact it comes with Safari browser for the internet. It beats downloading from the Mac. site. Safari is a good browser and seems a lot more stable then Internet Explorer. Well in short it is user friendly , very stable and my wife actually enjoys using the Mac. now (and those are the important things). I would highly suggest buying even if you use Jaguar.
Customer Review: Oh, so it WAS possible to improve on Jaguar! Summary: 5 StarsSoftware is funny that way. You can be happy with a release until you see the next generation, then you realize all its deficiencies at once. Now, finally, after 19 years of joy and suffering, with Panther we have what is very nearly the perfect desktop OS for the Mac - until the next one. I rate it 4.9 stars, and I'll round up this time.
If you own anything from 10.1.5 on down and have the supported hardware, the upgrade to Panther is the king of no-brainers. Everything is improved, and improved markedly - features too numerous to mention. It's even a bit faster.
If you're starting with Jaguar, the upgrade is more subtle, and you may want to take your time, maybe wait for 10.3.2 or 10.3.3. However, the improvement in Finder, which now goes by the iTunes model, is so dramatic that you will want to consider upgrading right away. Also, Panther plays really, really nice with a Windows network, which is the cross I have to bear, and if you do to, I think you'll want Panther now.
Deficiencies are mainly in the bundled apps, not the core OS, and they are mainly lack of features that were left off to keep the bundled aps from running away. I'm sure Expose will be great once I get used to it, but now it oftne surprises me when I don't expect it. iCal is nice, and I use it, but it could be a lot more powerful. Address book is beautfully done, and nicely integrated. Mail is generally excellent, but needs more formatting options. I use X11 frequently and it is solid, but there is room for improvement. Preview is very nice, but I wish it could export in more formats. For home use, iPhoto and iMovie are perfect for the casual user (like me), but more serious prosumer photographers and videographers will want unbundled apps like Photoshop or Final Cut Express.
Overall, very nice work by Apple, and will be hard to top. What's next - Tiger?
Customer Review: Very happy with panther! Summary: 5 StarsI picked up a copy of Panther from amazon's new & used section for a really low price. I am very happy with it. I haven't had any real problems (knock on wood). There are a lot of really cool features. I do however think it is a little pricey if you are only upgrading from OSX 10.2. I would suggest trying to find a used copy.
